While there is not a great deal of physical progress being achieved, plenty of organising and decision making has been made.
I have had the past week off to attend UNI in Toowoomba. Before I left I removed the wheels and cut back the frame a little.
The front rim is completely wrecked, not an issue though as this will be replaced with a small 19" rim.
While I was in Toowoomba for UNI I visited a couple of mechanics for some pro tips.
DNA Motorcycles is my go to mechanic, Dennis there is incredibly helpful. I told him of my plan to swap out the standard 21" front rim for a 19" giving the bike a smoother, lower, cafe style look. My original intention was to install the 19" and cut the front spring to balance up the look however, it is not quite that simple. Dennis gave me the rundown on how these changes will affect my handling. Long story short, the front and rear suspension will require adjusting with precision to ensure that the balance ratio remains unchanged with the new front wheel so that the bike handles smoothy through corners. We also discussed spring options to stiffed up the front for a better ride. More updates to come once I get to this stage.
I also dropped into Independent Motorcycle Wreckers. These guys have a huge shed out the back full of spar parts off every bike you could imagine. Soon as I walked into the shed an old CB200 fuel tank hanging from the roof caught my eye. We tried several other tanks but nothing looked as good. To be honest, I had already made the decision without looking at any of the other tanks. It was the cliche love at first sight scenario. Very pleased with this purchase.
There are two small dents on the other side that I will bog-up. There is also a small amount of rust on the inside that I will clean up and then apply a sealer kit just to be safe.
I particularly love the smooth flat line along the bottom of this tank, the way it drops off at the back and the Honda badge. When this is all done I feel this Honda badge will really set off the look.
The wreckers were incredibly helpful and put me in touch with Ash's Spoked Wheelz to kit me out with the custom 19" rim. I decided to stick with silver rims for the time being however, these may be powder coated/anodized at a later point. All I need to do is drop the hub into the shop and he will provide the rim and custom spokes ready to be laced. Ash will also fit the spokes and true the wheel if needed however, the hub will be eventually painted, so no point getting it laced up at this point.
The stock front rim is a 21x1.6 and will be replaced with a 19x1.85. Eventually I will have a 100/90/19 tyre fitted.
Time to get back to the garage and a pop the tyre off and undo all 36 spokes. I hope to have the new rim and spokes by Friday so that I can take the bike to DNA's and have the suspension done this weekend coming.
